Habits

Diurnal, Moult into and out of red-and-black breeding finery with the seasons. Sedentary and communal, breaking up into small groups or pairs to breed and later gathering in loose flocks of 20-30.

Habitat

Grassland Forest Woodland, Dwarf scrub and blady grass; mainly damp areas; open woodland.

Notes

Live in small family groups. Have permanent territories but move outside these after breeding. All members of the group help to feed the young.

August September October November December January February, 3 to 4; white, spotted reddish-brown.
